With the start of May, there’s an overwhelming number of things to do this weekend! I have some friends coming into town, so I know we will have plenty to do! Here are a few good options:
The NJ Audubon Society will have its seasonal Grand Opening, or May Days, on May 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville. In addition to hiking trails and bird watching, there will be music & entertainment, free face painting, live animal demonstrations, crafts, nature activities, healthy foood vendors, and more. The kicker? Free admission for all! Read more about the event here.
Interested in gardening, but don’t have the space? Start a container garden! Horticulturist Ann Bragg will be giving a free hands-on demonstration on how to plant container gardens for the sun or shade. Head to Pereaux Interior Design in Morristown on Saturday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Slow Food chapter of Northern NJ will hold its annual meeting on May 2 from 1 – 4 p.m. at Fosterfield’s farm. The event is open to members and non-members (interested in joining Slow Food) alike and promises to be very interesting. There will be three farmers there to do a panel discussion and Q & A on grass farming. They are Paul Dalrymple of Plaid Piper Farm (whose farm I have been to visit!), Kevin Matey Kemmerer of Stone Creek Farm and Rich DeFebio of Sunnyside Hill Farm. You’ll have the chance to buy grass-fed eggs, beef and pork, which is exciting, and enjoy a vegan, vegetarian or Roasted Turkey (from Plaid Piper Farm) picnic lunch.
You can also sign up for CSA’s with folks from Howling Wolf Full Food Farm, Griggstown Quail Farm & CSA and Starbrite Farm & CSA. Meet other members and learn about the Growing Minds Program Partnership at the Maple Ave School in Newark. So many great things packed into one event. I hope to see you there!
